All photographs on this page were taken in mid May 1989. Marshal Law was declared on Saturday 20th May and I continued taking photographs until the following Monday when I went to Shanghai. I returned to Beijing 2 days before the shootings on 4th June when the Peoples Liberation Army removed the demonstrators from the square.

The only way to get around in the city was to walk through a sea of people. These photographs were taken during a walk through the streets on my way to the centre of the square.
